Dr Ilya Levine

Dr Ilya Levine

Dr Levine was born in Rostov-on-Don, Russia in 1985 and emigrated to NZ with his family in 1994. He received his secondary education at Wellington College (1998-2002). He studied Politics, Economics and International Relations at VUW (2003-2007) and received a BA with First Class Honours. He then attended the University of Melbourne (2008-2013). After completing a Master of International Politics degree, he undertook PhD studies as a recipient of the Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship. The title of his thesis was “US Interests in Central Asia under George W Bush: Democracy, the War on Terror, and Energy.” Dr Levine carried out fieldwork in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and the United States in 2011. His fluency in Russian was a major asset during his time in Central Asia. He has just finished a successful five–week course on the Central Asian states for the Victoria Continuing Education Programme. Dr Levine is currently working on a book based on his PhD research.
