Caroline McDonald is a Wellingtonian and a graduate of Victoria University where she majored in anthropology. Her early years in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had a Pacific focus, and included postings in Fiji and Samoa. In 1987 her career took a change of course with a posting to London, and periods following that in the Economic and Middle East Divisions. In 1996 she was appointed High Commissioner to Vanuatu. In 2001, following a period in Wellington in the Development Cooperation Division and North Asia Division, she was appointed High Commissioner to India with cross accreditations to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.
