Alan Oxley is the chairman of the Australian APEC Study Centre. He is one of Australia’s most authoritative advisers on international trade, having previously served as Australian Ambassador to the GATT, the predecessor of the World Trade Organisation, from 1985 to 1989, and was the first Australian to serve as GATT Chairman. Prior to that, he represented Australia in Singapore, at the United Nations in New York and in Geneva. He played a key role in creating the ground-breaking coalition of agricultural exporters, the Cairns Group. He runs a strategic consultancy International Trade Strategies, which he founded in 1990, and also serves as a member of the Australian Government’s Foreign Affairs Council. Alan Oxley has been published in numerous newspapers and has also contributed to and written several books, including Seize the Future (2000) and The Challenge of FreeTrade (1990).

Alan Oxley has been brought to New Zealand by the Australian High Commission as part its activities to commemorate 20 years of CER.
