Born in Myanmar, Denis Win Thein is a New Zealander who has worked in the Information Technology industry in both Myanmar and NZ. He travels frequently to Myanmar and has spoken previously to the Asia Form on the subject.
Following Aung San Suu Kyi’s release, her meeting with President Thein Sein she was able to explore her new freedom by travelling outside Yangoon. Strike and form unions, and the right to conduct peaceful protests also seems to be gaining momentum.
With the emergence of an increasingly vibrant and critical media, and a growing range of independent political and civil society groups issues that would have been taboo in the past are now openly discussed in public circles. What has changed?
