Hood Salleh was Professor of Anthropology at the National University of Malaysia before taking up the Chair of Malay Studies at Victoria University in 1997. His main fields of interest are indigenous notions of leadership and the study of environment. He studied at the University of Western Australia for his first degree (1970) and obtained a Bachelor of Letters (1974) and a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford University (1978).

He says his work in New Zealand can be summarised as “attempting to enhance social, cultural and trade relations between Malaysia and New Zealand”.
