Rüdiger Frank is Professor of East Asian Economy and Society and the Head of the Dept. of East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna, Austria. Professor Frank holds an MA in Korean Studies, Economics, and International Relations from Humboldt-University Berlin and a PhD in Economics.
He has been researching Korea and in particular North Korea ever since his first visit there as a language student at Kim Il-sung University in 1991/1992. His last visit was in May 2018. Visiting Professorships include Korea University, Seoul National University, and Columbia University New York.
Professor Frank is a frequent contributor to “38North” and has from 2011-2019 closely cooperated with the World Economic Forum in its various Korea-related Councils. In 2013, the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” listed him as one of the top 50 German economists.

He is the author or editor of 14 books and numerous other publications including the bestselling “Nordkorea: Innenansichten eines totalen Staates” (DVA/Random House). His latest book “Unterwegs in Nordkorea: Eine Gratwanderung” has been translated into Korean in 2019 under the title “북한 여행” (Hankyoreh Publishing Company).
