John Luxton

Hon John Luxton

Mr John Luxton was a Cabinet Minister for nine years. His ministerial roles included Minister of Energy, Minister of Housing, Minister of Maori Affairs, Minister of Police, Minister of Commerce,Minister of Industry, Minister of Fisheries, Minister of Lands, Minister of Customs and Minister of Agriculture. He was also an Associate Minister of Education and of Overseas Trade.He also spent seven years in international agricultural consulting. Before entering politics in 1987 as the MP for Matamata, John used his agricultural tertiary background developing extensive farming interests and supplying Fonterra and the Tatua Co-operative Dairy Company.

As a farmer, he was an AC Cameron Award winner. His current directorships include the Wallace Corporation and Tatua, of which he has been a board member since 1978 and was Chairman from 1986 to 1990.

He was one of the founders of the Open Country Cheese Company and the Kaimai Cheese Company. He’s a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and holds a number of directorships in the agribusiness sector, including Chairman of DairyNZ. He Co-chairs the Waikato River Authority and is on the Massey University Foundation, the Government Constitutional Advisory Panel and the board of the Royal NZ Ballet Company. He also also a board member of the Royal Landcare Research, one of the Crown Research Institutes.
