Some background
In the aftermath of the massacre of some 145 people (including 132 children) in a Peshawar school on 16 December 2014, the Pakistani army escalated its air strikes. The military showed their determination to avenge the killing of the Peshawar students, most of whom had parents within the Pakistani armed forces. The majority aired their condemnation of the attack, conveying the impression that supporting terrorising acts is no longer acceptable. The Prime Minister declared that Pakistan would no longer differentiate between “good” and “bad” Taliban.
The Peshawar school attack was a vivid reminder of the challenges facing ongoing counter-terrorist operations, not only in Pakistan but in the region and on the Afghan-Pakistani border.

About Her Excellency Ms Zehra Akbari
With a Master’s Degree in International Relations, she joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1983. Her experiences included serving as Director, Director-General of South Asia in Islamabad. Her overseas postings have included Washington D.C., Kuala Lumpur, Warsaw, Dublin and as Ambassador of Pakistan to Mexico (with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador and Nicaragua). She is currently High Commissioner for Pakistan to New Zealand and Samoa.
